Colorado Automotive Recyclers Receive Award
October 4, 2005

The Colorado Automotive Recyclers Association members received recognition for their efforts in removing mercury switches from end of life vehicles. The Colorado Dept. of Public Health and Environment awarded them a Bronze Environmental Achievement award for their unique and progressive agreement with the department to implement a voluntary switch removal program.

As a result, nearly 33,000 mercury-containing switches have been removed from scrapped automobiles resulting in 75 pounds of mercury recovered since the program began in 2004. CAR members also hosted training sessions and shared their meetings and newsletter with the State to support the program. The commitment of this organization and its members has not only benefited the environment of the State of Colorado but also help develop one of the most successful switch removal programs in the country.
